About Surabaya

Surabaya is the capital city of the East Java province in Indonesia and holds the distinction of being the second-largest city in the country after Jakarta. It’s located on Java Island’s northeastern corner, facing the Madura Strait, making it one of the earliest port cities in Southeast Asia. Surabaya is also  known as the “City of Heroes” due to its critical role in the Indonesian National Revolution, specifically in the Battle of Surabaya. Cultural Heritages

 

The Hero Monument (Tugu Pahlawan) was established on November 10, 1951, and inaugurated on November 10, 1952, by the first President of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno. It was built to commemorate the heroic struggle of Indonesian independence fighters during the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. To further honor this history, the November 10 Museum was constructed underground within the Hero Monument Complex, spanning 1,366 square meters at a depth of 7 meters. This museum project began on November 10, 1991, and was officially opened on February 19, 2000, by the then President of Indonesia, KH. Abdul Rahman Wahid. The museum serves to support the significance of the Hero Monument and enrich the historical facilities at the site.
